Under GAPP, a legally responsible parent can become a W-2 employee of Ava and be paid for personal care hours. Ava calls this its Family Caregiver program, and it always works alongside skilled nursing: an Ava RN or LPN is part of your child’s care.

Ava is run by an experienced, passionate leadership and care team. Families can reach Ava’s executive leadership when they need to, and if something isn’t right with a shift, you call and someone who can decide answers.

- What does it cost?
Nothing, if your child qualifies for GAPP. Georgia Medicaid pays Ava directly. You will not get a bill from us for approved care.
- How long does approval take?
It depends mostly on how fast your child’s doctor sends records. We call the office for you and tell you where things stand each week.
- Who is GAPP not a fit for?
- Young adults 21 and older. GAPP ends at 21.
- Children who need a sitter or childcare without a medical need.
- Families who want care without a doctor’s order.
- Children who need a hospital or facility level of care.
- How do you choose my child’s nurse?
While your GAPP approval is in progress, our team works with your family to understand your child’s nursing needs, your preferred schedule and the kind of nurse who would be the best fit, so we can start preparing staffing as soon as services are approved. We never simply assign a nurse to a family or push a nurse onto a case: families take part in interviewing and choosing their nurse, and we make sure both the family and the nurse feel comfortable with the match.

Common questions about in-home care for kids in Georgia
Can my medically fragile child get free nursing care at home in Georgia?
Yes, if your child is under 21, has Georgia Medicaid and has a medical need a doctor will order care for. That program is GAPP. Approved care costs your family nothing.
How do I apply for GAPP in Atlanta?
Call a GAPP provider like Ava. We collect your child’s physician’s order and medical records, fill out the application with you and submit it. See GAPP application help.
My child doesn’t have Medicaid. Can they still get GAPP?
Many children with serious medical needs qualify for Georgia Medicaid through the Katie Beckett pathway, which looks at the child’s needs rather than the parents’ income. Call us and we will talk through where to start.
Can I get paid to take care of my disabled child in Georgia?
Through GAPP, a parent or legal guardian can be hired as a W-2 employee of an agency like Ava and paid for personal care hours, alongside skilled nursing from the agency’s RNs or LPNs. Ava calls this Family Caregiver, and a nurse is always part of the child’s care.
What’s the difference between an RN, an LPN and a personal care aide?
An RN assesses your child and writes the care plan. An LPN gives skilled nursing care during shifts. A personal care aide helps with daily living like bathing and feeding. Read more on pediatric home nursing (RN and LPN) and pediatric personal care.
What happens when my child turns 21?
GAPP ends at 21. Georgia has adult programs such as ICWP and NOW/COMP. Ava is working to offer these so families can stay with us after 21, and does not offer them yet. The 21 Clock helps you plan the handoff early.
